Cruise ship passengers evacuated near Falklands
More than 300 passengers and crew were evacuated from a luxury cruise ship when a fire broke out as it sailed north of the Falkland Islands.
Ponant’s Le Boreal was travelling from Grave Cove to South Georgia when the alarm was raised in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Some 347 passengers and crew are understood to have boarded sister ship L’Austral that was nearby at the time of the incident with the help of HMS Clyde. There are no reported injuries.
The remainder of the cruise on Le Boreal has been cancelled and passengers are being repatriated.
The fire is believed to have started in the engine room. Engineers are carrying out an investigation.
Le Boreal won the European Cruiser Association Award for Best New Ship of the Year 2010.
