Two tourism initiatives have been recognized for their environmental excellence by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and Travelmole.
Barbados’ Harrison’s Cave and the Surama Village Eco-Lodge of Guyana were both handed the 2011 Caribbean Excellence in Sustainable Tourism Award in Bermuda yesterday.
Local and international judges headed up by the president of the global development agency Counterpart International Lelei LeLaulu selected the winners after being impressed by how closely they had adhered to sustainability targets.
Lelaulu said: “These two initiatives reflect two of the core aims of the CTO and TravelMole; namely to use tourism as an anti-poverty/development tool and to encourage the continuing refinement of products to ensure enhanced environmental conservation and added revenue generation.”

CTO secretary general Hugh Riley and Travelmole’s own Graham McKenzie presented awards to Veronica Millington of Caves of Barbados and Sydney Allicock of Surama Village Eco-Lodge.
