Cuba travel: Trump set to reverse some Obama reforms
President Donald Trump is set to roll back some Obama-era policies on Cuba, which could have a major impact on US airlines and cruise operators.
The Daily Caller cites two sources that changes are coming soon and are partly down to behind-the-scenes lobbying by Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez and Republican Florida Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart.
"The Trump Administration has been ready since February 2017 to announce changes, but issues unrelated to Cuba have intervened," said John Kavulich of the nonpartisan U.S. – Cuba Trade and Economic Council.
It is unclear to what extent any changes will impact US-Cuba tourism but Kavulich did say new rules will include ‘increased enforcement relating to travel.’
He said it will be ‘a focus upon discouraging transactions with entities controlled by the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) of the Republic of Cuba.’
That could at least spell trouble for Starwood Hotels & Resorts International which operates a Havana hotel owned by a company with links to FAR, according to Kavulich.
It is thought Trump will announce full details during a speech in Miami next month.
