Death toll rises in Italy earthquake
British holidaymakers have described their panic after being caught up in an earthquake in central Italy, which has claimed at least 120 lives.
The 6.2 quake at 3.36 am was felt as far away as Rome, which is about 65 kms southwest from the epicentre in Norcia, near Perugia, in the mountains.
A British family of 10 staying in a villa 20 kms from the epicentre told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme they were woken in the early hours by ‘severe shaking of the beds’.
The mayor of Amatrice, one of the worst affected areas, said half the town had been destroyed.
Sergio Perozzi told the local radio station: "The roads in and out of town are cut off. Half the town is gone. There are people under the rubble. There’s been a landslide and a bridge might collapse."
