Delta Air Lines latest carrier to hike checked bag fees

Saturday, 20 Sep, 2018 0

Delta Air Lines has joined peers JetBlue and United Airlines in hiking checked bag fees.

Delta will match the increases made first by JetBlue and then United by applying an extra $5 for first and second checked bag to $30 and $40 respectively.

Now three of the top five carriers in the US have upped their fees in just a few weeks.

JetBlue set off the chain reaction a month ago by becoming the first to charge $30 for the first checked bag.

That was quickly followed by Canada’s big two Air Canada and WestJet, and then United, all with similar fee increases.

American Airlines has not yet announced impending bag fee increases but is expected to follow sooner rather than later.

That’s not the case for Southwest Airlines.

Southwest is the one holdout in the industry that takes pride in its ‘Bags Fly Free’ policy.

The company has consistently said there is no plan to change that.

Delta raked in more than $900 million in baggae fees last year, which is about triple the amount the airline first collected when it began charging for checked bags a decade ago.
