Delta lends support to Gatwick Express plan

Delta Airlines has voiced its backing to a plan to secure the long-term future of the Gatwick Express.

Fears for its future surfaced as the Department of Transport studied a recommendation to replace it with extra stopping services, which would create additional capacity on the Brighton mainline commuter route. The plans also suggest replacing the Gatwick Express trains with standard carriages.

The proposals follow the release of figures showing Gatwick Express trains from the airport to Victoria were only 20% full compared with commuter services which were up to 125% full.

BAA and National Express, which operates the Gatwick Express franchise, have submitted their own proposal that would see more seats available for all passengers, a more punctual service for all users of the Brighton mainline and starting and stopping all peak hour services at Three Bridges.

Delta Airlines urged the BAA to adopt the BAA plan.

“We believe it is vital to maintain a dedicated, non-stop train service between Gatwick and central London,” said managing director Atlantic region Loren Neuenschwander. “We urge the UK department of transport to fully consider these new plans which we understand will protect the special features that the Gatwick Express offers its air passengers, namely non-stop service and its frequency, specialising rolling stock and proper facilities for passengers with baggage.”
