Delta Air Lines had to temporarily pull dozens of planes for checks due to severe weather at its Atlanta hub.

About 100 plans were checked for hail stone damage amid rough weather.

The area was also hit by heavy flash flooding.

Overall, there were thousands of delays and at least 90 flights diverted from ATL.

Delays continued into Sunday.

The airline had to cancel nearly 400 flights.

“Delta people are working as safely and quickly as possible to recover flights impacted by thunderstorms, lightning, hail and winds at our Atlanta hub,” the airline said at the weekend.

“We thank our customers for their continued patience and understanding.”

Delta technicians worked through the night to complete to complete checks on all planes.

Most were back up and running by Sunday, although there may still be an impact today.

Due to the weather, the FAA had to place a temporary groundstop on flights landing at Atlanta.

The hail was so strong most air traffic controllers had to be evacuated from the control tower.

Just two were left in the tower to handle communications with flights in the air.
