Delta sells jets to Amazon
Delta Air Lines has found a buyer for some of its Boeing 767-300 aircraft.
Ecommerce giant Amazon will become the new owner and will also buy four 767s from Canadian carrier WestJet.
It marks the first aircraft purchases for Amazon which has so far leased planes.
It also highlights the contrasting fortunes during the pandemic of the growth of online shopping and the decline of passenger air travel.
The 11 planes will join the Amazon fleet starting this year after it converts them to cargo use.
"Our goal is to continue delivering for customers across the US in the way that they expect from Amazon, and purchasing our own aircraft is a natural next step toward that goal," said Sarah Rhoads, Vice President of Amazon Global Air.
"Having a mix of both leased and owned aircraft in our growing fleet allows us to better manage our operations."
Amazon said it will continue using third-party carriers to operate the aircraft.
