Delta Air Lines has agreed a big $79 million settlement for dumping jet fuel in a residential area, drenching children playing in a school yard.

The incident happened five years ago just after a Delta flight had departed for China.

It immediately had a technical issue and had to return to Los Angeles International Airport.

Before landing it needed to jettison full tanks of fuel.

Pilots dumped thousands of gallons of jet fuel over the Cudahy neighborhood which has multiple schools.

Forty people including dozens of children from Park Avenue Elementary School were doused in jet fuel and required medical attention.

The lawsuit was filed by four Cudahy residents.

The total of $78.8 million, will be shared out among property owners and other residents.

It is estimated that nearly 40,000 properties were impacted by the jet fuel dump.
