Despite CDC guidelines, airports packed with holiday travelers
Despite warnings from the CDC for people to spend the Thanksgiving holidays at home, the number of travelers at airports was at its highest level since mid-March.
The TSA screened 1,070,967 people on Wednesday, a record high since the pandemic began affecting travel in the US.
Still, it is only 40% of last year’s corresponding day of 2.6 million people screened on outbound Thanksgiving trips.
Although Wednesday was a busy day, there have been widespread cancellations in recent days, as people become increasingly risk-averse.
Virtually every state is showing big increases in Covid cases with many cities imposing heavier restrictions, mask mandates and even curfews.
The CDC advisory has had some effect.
According to a survey by Axios-Ipsos, 61% made adjustments to their plans for Thanksgiving and nearly 10% said they would not celebrate the holiday at all.
As airports had their busiest pandemic-era day, there were more than 180,000 new cases recorded on Wednesday.
It is the 23rd consecutive day there has been more than 100,000 daily cases.
