Destination Canada halts marketing activities in China as political tension escalates
Canada’s tourism body has ceased marketing activities in China following the detention of a third Canadian national in the country.
The organisation said it had decided to temporarily pause or postpone its marketing efforts in China.
However, it said China continues to be Canada’s third largest inbound market and of significant important in the future.
Destination Canada’s decision to suspend marketing efforts follows a successful Canada-China Year of Tourism campaign.
Tourism marketing agencies in the provinces are also halting activities.
The dispute started with the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver earlier this month at the behest of the US.
She is facing possible extradition to the US on suspicion the company circumnavigated US sanctions in Iran.
China responded by detaining former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and entrepreneur Michael Spavor. On Thursday, China detained Canadian teacher Sarah McIver for working illegally.
