DFAT issues US travel warning

Australians in the United States have been warned to remain on alert amid fears of a terrorist attack on the New York subway system in coming days.

It comes after American soldiers in Iraq claimed they had uncovered evidence of a terrorist bomb plot targeting the US.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered increased security on the subway system after being briefed on the threat by the FBI.

He warned the threat – which includes the use of explosives packed in baby strollers – suggested New York’s underground train network and its 4.5 million daily passengers could be attacked within days.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) today updated its travel advice for Australians as follows: –

The DFAT website advises Australians in the US to be alert to their own security.

“As you would in Australia, use common sense and be alert to suspicious activities,” the DFAT website said.

“Travellers can expect additional scrutiny of personal belongings, including inspection of bags and luggage, when travelling on the subway system.”

Australian travellers in the US are also advised to avoid areas affected by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.
