DFAT updates Thailand Travel Advisory
With Australia updating its travel advice for Thailand to warn of the potential for bombings over the next week, Dr Keith Suter, Foreign Affairs Editor for Ch 9’s Sunrise breakfast show says that travellers should still travel to Thailand but take notice of where DFAT says it is OK to go and not travel to where DFAT advised them not to.
With DFAT not upgrading the advisory for Thailand but advising a high degree of caution for Thailand overall and advising that travellers reconsider the need for travel to Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla , he said he would travel to Bangkok and the major tourist areas including Phuket, but keep away from the other locations DFAT advised tourists to keep away from.
DFAT said that predictions of attacks during Buddhist holidays, which begin tomorrow, are credible, adding, “Thai authorities have previously warned of the possibility of further coordinated bombings in Thailand to coincide with symbolic dates, including in Bangkok and the southern provinces,” adding, “They have mentioned the Buddhist festive season of Songhkran, around the period April 11-17, 2007 as a particular time of concern,” saying, “We assess these warnings are credible.”
The fresh warning follows a bomb exploding yesterday outside a Bangkok shopping centre that was also hit in a wave of deadly New Year’s Eve attacks, but no one was injured in the latest bombing, which prompted Thai authorities to issued a nationwide security alert.
