Disneyland set to reopen in Tokyo
Tokyo Disneyland will reopen on April15, more than a month after a massive quake-tsunami hit Japan, causing widespread damage and knocking out power supplies.
The amusement park closed on March 12, a day after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan.
The amusement park remained largely intact despite some damage to its car park, but the operator Oriental Land Co had to close the popular tourist site because of rolling blackouts due to a region-wide power shortage caused by multiple power plant shutdowns.
Meanwhile, ground has been broken on the first Disney theme park in China.
Chief executive Bob Iger said that the park would be authentically Disney but distinctly Chinese.
The park, on the site of 2010 Expo in Shanghai, will be developed jointly with a Shanghai government owned consortium. It is due to open in five years’ time.
Disney is also planning to expand its Hong Kong Disneyland, which has suffered losses and has been criticized for being too small.
