Dog and cat off the menu in Vietnam tourist city
Historic Hoi An has vowed to keep four-legged friends off dishes in restaurants and food stalls.
City officials agreed to phase out the sale of cat and dog meat in partnership with animal rights group Four Paws International.
It is the first city in Vietnam to do so.
An estimated five million dogs are eaten annually in Vietnam although the ‘delicacy’ is on the wane due to the stigma.
Four Paws International conducted a survey this year which found nearly 90% are in favour of a ban.
In 2018, Hanoi asked people to stop eating dog meat although it stopped short of an official ban.
Hanoi officials said it was damaging the city’s reputation.
