Don’t blow your French holiday with a fine
Self-drive holidays specialists, DriveAway Holidays has moved to ensure that its clients do not fall foul of new French road laws that require drivers to keep two disposable breath-test kits in their vehicles.
It is now compulsory for all vehicles to have a breath test kit onboard for drivers to self-check their alcohol level, with an on-the-spot fine of Euro11 (approx AUDD13.50) if you are stopped by police and don’t have one.
"Our suppliers are putting two into every vehicle on pick-up so if you are stopped by police and have already used one kit, you’ve still a spare until you’ve time to purchase a replacement at a supermarket or service station for around AUD2.50 to $5," said DriveAway’s senior marketing manager, Chris Cowley.
The legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers in France is 0.05%, although while the new self breath-test laws came into force on July 1, they won’t be enforced until November 1 this year.
