Dozens of tourists killed in Kashmir shooting
More than 20 tourists have been killed in a mass shooting at a resort in India-controlled Kashmir.
Police say gunmen targeted tourists and have described it as a terrorist attack.
They say there were at least four gunmen.
Dozens mote were injured.
No group has claimed responsibility. If true, it marks a shift in divided Kashmir as tourists have rarely been targeted.
“This attack is much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years,” regional chief Omar Abdullah said.
Police are searching for the attackers and there has been no immediate claim of responsibility.
The attack came as US vice president JD Vance was in the country.
“Over the past few days, we have been overcome with the beauty of this country and its people. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this horrific attack,” Vance said.
The attack happened in Pahalgam. a popular tourist destination. The area is known for its scenic Himalayan foothills
Around 3.5 million tourists visited Kashmir in 2024.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short a trip to Saudi Arabia after the attack. “Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakeable and it will get even stronger,” Modi posted on X.
