A bus driver from Northern Ireland was killed and a 13-year-old boy from Essex was seriously injured in a coach crash in Belgium.

The accident happened in West Flanders yesterday morning as the coach was carrying 34 children from Brentwood School in Essex.

One boy suffered a cracked skull. He is in intensive care in a Belgian hospital, said the BBC.

The deceased driver has been named as James ‘Geordie’ Chance. A second driver from Northern Ireland is in a stable condition in hospital.

Three other pupils and two teachers were treated in hospital for injuries, including broken bones.

The bus company, Richmond Coaches, is from Lisburn, County Antrim in Northern Ireland, according to the BBC.

Eyewitnesses said the bus crashed into a motorway bridge pillar on the A18 at Middelkerke, West Flanders.
