Driver of killer speedboat escapes prosecution
The driver of a speedboat that careered on to a beach, killing a two-year-old boy as he slept, has escaped prosecution.
According to the Daily Mail, Paul Gallagher was killed on Paradise Island, in the Bahamas, while on a family holiday.
The newspaper, reporting from the inquest into the boy’s death, heard that his parents dived for safety but that the two-year-old was hit by the boat’s propeller and died in hospital five days later.
The parents claim that Bahamian inquiries had been a whitewash, and that the boat’s driver has not been prosecuted despite the fact he did not hold a skipper’s licence.
The Gallaghers are reportedly hoping that the coroner will record a verdict of unlawful killing, based on either involuntary manslaughter or gross negligence manslaughter.
If that is the case, there is the possibility that British police could travel to the Bahamas to carry out an investigation.
