Drunken America West pilots to remain in jail

The two fired America West pilots convicted last week of operating a jetliner while drunk three year ago were denied bail Thursday.  The presiding judge ordered pilot Thomas Cloyd, 47, and co-pilot Christopher Hughes, 44, held for at least five more weeks until sentencing.

The pilots were convicted of attempting to operate an aircraft while drunk.  They had spent the night in a bar drinking only hours before their scheduled July 2002 flight from Miami to Phoenix.

The flight was stopped before takeoff after security screeners had noticed alcohol on their breaths.

The pilots had argued during the trial that they were not in control of their Airbus 319 carrying 117 passengers and crew because it was being towed by a tug when police ordered it to return to the gate.

The prosecutor of the case had argued that the pilots posed an unusual risk of fleeing because they have the connections to get to planes and can fly them.
