Dubai tower aims for height record

Thursday, 10 Dec, 2004 0

At least one hotel will be included in what will be, by quite some distance, the tallest building in the world.

The Times today prints a computer image of the planned Burj Dubai building, which will be completed in 2008 and will tower some 2,624 feet – just 16ft short of half a mile, the newspaper points out – over the port of Dubai.

The Burj Dubai will be some 50 per cent taller that the Freedom Tower, which will be built on the site of the World Trade Center in New York.

The 160-storey tower and its surrounding development, covering 20 acres, will reportedly incorporate “the world’s largest shopping mall, six residential blocks, offices, hotels, restaurants and cinemas”.

A computer-generated impression of the tower has been posted on the BBC News website at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4081885.stm.
