Earthquake strikes Italian holiday island
Two people died and 39 others were injured when an earthquake struck the popular holiday island of Ischia, off the coast of Naples.
The 4.0 magnitude quake hit just before 9pm last night, damaging a church and hospital, said the BBC.
One elderly woman was reportedly killed by debris falling from a church, while another woman’s body was found in the rubble of a collapsed building.
The earthquake struck at a depth of three miles just north of the commune of Casamicciola. A hospital in the commune of Lacco Ameno had to be evacuated and a temporary unit set up outside.
Ischia has a population of 50,000, but significantly more in the summer when numbers are swollen by tourists.
