EasyJet charges passengers for proof of cancellations

Budget airline easyJet has been criticised for charging passengers £10 for proof of flight cancellations.

The airline levies the charge when passengers request the proof to submit to their travel insurance companies to support claims for compensation.

The Association of European Airlines said it was unaware of other airlines charging for the service. A spokesman said: "We don’t do research on all the fees our airlines charge for services but a fee for proof of cancellation is new to us.  As far as we know, our member airlines give this service for free."

An easyJet spokesman said described the £10 charge as an ‘admin fee’ and said it was applied because each letter had to be individually researched.

The fee came to light after passengers sought compensation from their insurance companies for flight delays caused by the recent French air traffic control strike.

In a statement today, easyJet said:" This is a legitimate cost to help the insurance company process the claim. It will be covered as part of the claim so the customer will be reimbursed.

"Although the French strikes were outside of easyJet’s control, we provided hundreds of thousands of customers with hotel accommodation and meals if their flights were cancelled, in line with EU regulations. easyJet also operated a number of rescue flights to help get passengers to their destination following the strike."
