Easyjet demands explanation for Gatwick ice chaos

Friday, 12 Dec, 2008 0

Easyjet has demanded an explanation from Gatwick owner BAA following flight chaos caused by the closure of the airport’s runway due to ice yesterday morning.

The budget carrier had 32 flights disrupted and faces further knock-on effects due to the closure of the runway in the early morning peak (see previous TravelMole story).

Gatwick blamed “extreme weather conditions” for closing the runway at 05.50. The runway did not re-open until around 10.30, affecting more than 60 departures and arrivals, many of which were cancelled or diverted.

A spokesman for the airline branded the disruption as “disgraceful” and said EasyJet would be looking for BAA to explain why such a problem should occur in the first place.

“It would appear that BAA was the only organisation in the South East who did not know that there was going to be bad weather last night,” said spokesman Andrew McConnell.
