Emirates US promotion is unfair, say rivals
Emirates latest fare promotion is offering US travelers two-for-one fares from its nine US gateways to Dubai, further irritating America’s big three airlines.
Emirates’ limited time promotional fares are available for flights from Seattle, Dallas/ Fort Worth, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Boston, Washington D.C. and New York.
Fares are from $1,299 including taxes and fees in economy class for bookings made until March 12, 2015.
Fares are valid for travel from March 24 to December 10, 2015.
Emirates flies the world’s largest passenger jet, the Airbus A380 on its routes from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and New York.
Emirates says it has flown more than 9 million passengers on US flights since launching services to New York in 2004.
The two-for-one offer comes just days after the Partnership for Open & Fair Skies – made up of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines – released a detailed report accusing Gulf carriers Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways of benefiting from government subsidies to the tune of $40 billion.
This gives them an unfair advantage under the Open Skies agreement, the three US airlines say.
Spokesman Carter Yang for the Partnership for Open & Fair Skies called this latest fare offer another example of financial doping.
“Fueled by tens of billions of dollars in government subsidies, the Gulf airlines do not operate as independent commercially viable entities. This promotion is a prime example of how these carriers tilt the playing field,” he said.
