England’s North East a ‘must see’ destination in ‘08
The North East of England has emerged as a ‘must-see’ destination in 2008 by a leading travel guide.
The region is one of only 30 places around the world to make it into Lonely Planet’s Bluelist 2008 ‘Go List’ section – a chapter dedicated to detailing the up-and-coming destinations.
The book praises the North East as “the most exciting, beautiful and friendly region in the whole of England”.
It pinpoints rejuvenated cities, fascinating history and the dramatic Northumberland wilderness among its attractions.
Last year’s edition tipped Belfast as an up-and-coming city, and in the same year the city saw a record number of visitors.
Though Scotland and Ireland do not feature in the ‘GoList’ section, elsewhere in the book they make it onto the list of the 10 Friendliest Countries.
Ireland tops the list with its “deliciously dark sense of humour” and “welcoming attitude towards strangers”.
Referring to Scotland, the book states: “Forget Begbie in the film Trainspotting – Scotland’s becoming the destination for visitors to the British Isles, winning out over dog-eat-dog London.”
