English tourism urged to embrace Rugby World Cup
Two years out from the start of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, VisitEngland chief executive James Berresford has been speaking about the opportunities for destinations across the country to make the most of the tournament.
"One of the most important benefits for tourism is that the tournament and associated training camps will be hosted by destinations from all over England, spreading the benefits for tourism far and wide," he said.
Berresford said the length of the tournament, spread over a 44 day period, and with several days between each team’s fixtures, meant supporters, friends, family and media from home and abroad would have time to explore host destinations and beyond, throughout England.
"With confirmed teams from major international markets, including Australia, Italy, Ireland and France as well as South Africa, Canada and New Zealand, there is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of England in these key markets," Berresford said.
Hosting Rugby World Cup 2015, the third largest sporting event in the world after the Olympics and FIFA World Cup, is estimated by Deloittes to be worth £2.1bn to the British economy.
