EU aviation security experts call emergency meeting
EU aviation security experts are meeting today to discuss how to prevent a repeat of last week’s terrorist attack at Brussel’s Zaventem airport.
It has been suggested the European Commission committee for civil aviation security will consider the possibility of body scanners outside airport departure halls.
However, the Telegraph reported a source close to the committee saying the idea was unlikely to be recommended as this would make an attack outside the airport building more likely.
Any recommendations from today’s meeting, which is being attended by a representative from the UK Department for Transport, will be put to a meeting of EU transport ministers in Amsterdam on April 14.
However, regardless of the recommendations, it will be up to each member state to decide what, if any, measures to take as airport areas before security checks are not governed by EU rules on aviation security.
