Eurostar to pilot biometric travel solution

Tuesday, 21 Oct, 2021 0

High-speed cross-channel rail operator Eurostar is trialling a new biometrics-based travel solution by identity, payments and data protection developer Entrust.

Travellers no longer need to show passports and boarding passes at every stage of their journey and are able to move seamlessly across borders, international train stations and airports.

Working with partner iProov, Entrust’s remote identification solution will allow Eurostar passengers to register their face and passport before travel.

On arrival at St. Pancras International train station, passengers will use their face to check in for their train and their passport data will be automatically sent to UK border force for checks.

"We are confident that the Seamless Travel Solution will help launch the world into a new era of travel, allowing travellers to feel safer and experience less hassle, while also enabling operational efficiency to both border agencies and the entire travel industry," said Gordon Wilson, Vice President Identity Verification at Entrust.

The tech is targeted at airlines, train operators, cruise lines, airports, border agencies, and other key operators in the global travel and tourism ecosystem.

It will lead to less hassle due to the contactless biometric corridors that employ facial recognition tech to confirm the traveller’s identity.

The Seamless Travel Solution follows all GDPR regulations, does not retain personally identifiable information and encrypts all data in transit.

Each traveller using the service receives the option to store their Digital Travel Credential on their personal mobile device, but is not mandatory.
