Ex-Egyptian tourism minister jailed for corruption
Egypt’s former tourism minister Zuhair Garranah has been jailed for five years on charges of corruption.
According to reports from the BBC and the AFP news agency, a ‘judical source’ said Garranah had illegally given out tourism licences.
He was sentenced along with two businessmen and was charged with wasting public funds worth over £30 million.
It is reported that he authorised the sale of state-owned land for well below the market price.
A number of ex Egyptian ministers and officials have been jailed, or are being investigated, following the political unrest that led to the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak in February.
