Expanded convention center has uncertain future
The Philadelphia Convention Center is being doubled to nearly one million square feet.
The move will allow center officials to double-book the space for two major conventions at the same time.
But despite that plan, officials there say they can’t announce a completion date.
The $650 million expansion will not be completed any earlier than 2008, convention officials said.
Adding to the confusion: The expansion will be largely funded from proceeds from a state tax on gaming parlors which will not open until later this year. Even the exact locations of two sites in Philadelphia for gaming have yet to be determined.
