Experience Thailand and the Khon Dance in Sydney for Free – tonight

Saturday, 05 Jul, 2006 0

It isn’t often that an opportunity comes along to experience and enjoy some outstanding cultural performances, but for Sydneysiders, today Wednesday at Sydney Town Hall will be different!

The Royal Thai Consulate and Tourism Authority of Thailand are hosting the visit to Sydney of the Bangkok Dramatic College, who will be performing at Sydney Town Hall tonight from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

This free cultural performance is in honour of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s and his 60th Anniversary on the Throne, making him the world’s longest reigning monarch.

The performance of the traditional Khon Dance, displaying good overcoming evil, has been passed down throughout all of Thailand for more than one thousand years. Performed wearing masks, the drama involves singing, dancing, acting, acrobatics and music.

Traditionally, Khon dramas were performed at the court for special occasions, such as weddings, funerals and births and on rare occasions, there were open-air performances which the public could attend.

The Khon Drama involves Khon masks which comprise part of the costume of performers of the classical dance-drama of Thailand.

The dance-drama is also known as “Khon” with a Khon performance involving singing, dancing, acting, acrobatics, and music.

Stories for the drama are based exclusively on the Ramakien, the Thai version of an Indian epic.

No RSVP’s required, just turn up at Sydney Town Hall at 7:00pm for superlative evening of authentic Thai music, dance and drama.
