Experience the 90th Anniversary of ANZAC’s Greatest Military Victory in World War I
The ANZAC victory which decisively changed the destiny of the entire Middle East was the charge of the Australian Light Horse who captured Beersheba (now in southern Israel) on October 31st 1917.
General Allenby’s 54,000 strong Allied force had besieged Beersheba for 3 weeks but failed to break the resistance of 4,000 Turkish defenders.
Beersheba’s water supplies were the key to an advance on Jerusalem and Damanscus. In the space of 15 incredible minutes at sunset on 31 October 1917, 800 Australian Light horsemen supported by New Zealand infantry led by Major General Harry Chauvel captured Beersheba in the last successful horse cavalry charge in world military history. Despite charging into machine gun and artilliary fire, 32 Australians were killed in the charge. They are buried at the Commonwealth War cemetery in Beersheba.
The capture of Beersheba and its vital water wells enabled Allenby’s forces to conquer Palestine , Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. The demise of the Ottomon Empire led to the creation of the modern states of Israel, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. The Beersheba charge is exhibited at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The NSW cities of Tamworth and Armidale from where many of the Lighhorsemen came commemorate Beersheba Day. In his 2007 ANZAC Day speech Governor General Major General Michael Jeffery discussed the significance of Beersheba.
On October 31, 2007 a group of Israeli and Australian horsemen will re-enact the Australian Lighthorse charge at Beersheba, a thriving city of 150,000 in Israel’s Negev Desert. The re-enactment will be the highlight of a commemoration ceremony held at the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Beersheba. For clients interested in being a part of this important day in Australian military history a special one off GMTC Israel program (Israel Prelude 6 Days with Beersheba Charge commencing from Tel Aviv 27 October) priced from $1,199 pp twin share will include the Beersheba memorial Ceremony as an integral part of the program.
Participants on this program will also experience the highlights of Israel including Jerusalem, Galilee and the Dead Sea. For bookings and details phone 1300 661 666.
