FAA makes 90 per cent of planes 5G-safe

Sunday, 26 Jan, 2022 0

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said this week it has approved about 90% of US commercial aircraft to operate low-visibility landings where 5G wireless is live.

As of last week, it had approved altimeters for about 78% of commercial planes.

The agency said it granted approvals for seven more altimeters, which now makes the total approved to 20.

Radio altimeters are required to assist landings in bad weather but existing equipment could be disrupted by 5G.

The issue has been disrupting operations in poor weather at regional airports.

Alaska Air said this week it cancelled flights due to the combination of fog and the.5G issue at Paine Field Airport where it operates regional jets.

"Rollout of this new 5G band is still creating disruptions for regional air travel," the airline said.
