Fancy a trip to Mars?
Walt Disney has reportedly splashed out a scarcely-believable USD100 million on a new ride that simulates a trip to Mars.
Mission: Space, a three-year venture with the IT giant Hewlett-Packard, is described as an “extreme thrill” – and The Daily Telegraph reports that the marketing for the new ride is “not misplaced”.
The newspaper’s Simon English, reviewing the ride, writes: “Riders are, after a brief training session, strapped into a four-man box that spins at a fearsome rate on a trip to Mars that certainly seems realistic. After a G-force lift-off that leaves your face wobbling and induces nervous laughter in most people, the craft swings round the moon.
“Briefly, you feel completely weightless; a pleasant effect unless you ignore the instructions to look straight ahead at the computer screen. At this point nausea may be a problem and most people stumble upon disembarking.” Disney engineers reportedly state there is no experience on earth that so closely replicates what it feels like to be an astronaut.
