fastjet sets date for first international flight after delays
Low cost African airline, fastjet, has said its international flights will start on October 18 after it had to postpone its inaugural flight due to ‘administrative delays’.
Its service from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Johannesburg in South Africa had been due to launch on September 27, but South African officials made a "very late" request for additional documents, the airline said.
A number of flights had to be cancelled and all affected passengers were offered a full refund and a complimentary seat on another flight, travelling within the next month.
The airline, which was co-founded by Sir Stelios Haji-Iaonnou, the easyJet entrepreneur, has ambitions to become the first pan-African low-cost carrier.
Flights between Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg will initially run three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
fastjet CEO and interim chairman Ed Winter said: "The South African Department of Transport has completed its review of the additional documents it requested and has issued an updated Foreign Operator Permit.
"Until now, flying between Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg has been prohibitively expensive for many people."
