FCO issues shortbreaks warning
Holidaymakers taking shortbreaks are being warned to check whether their accommodation is bonded following the collapse of shortbreaks operator, Travelscene.
The warning comes from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which this week is launching a campaign to warn shortbreak travellers that they should prepare for a shortbreak as they would for a longer holiday.
Research commissioned by FCO found that around a third of shortbreak travellers do not get insurance, which rises to 62% for 16 to 24 year olds going on shortbreaks.
The awareness campaign is also urging travellers to find out more about local laws and customs before embarking on a trip. It is part of FCO’s “Know before you go” campaign that includes a website with details on how to prepare for a trip and information for when you get there. The address is www.fco.gov.uk/travel.
FCO minister for consular affairs, Baroness Symons said: “Many British travellers, especially teenagers and those in their 20s, are needlessly putting themselves at risk. Although a shortbreak may only last a few days, it is still important to ensure you’re prepared.”
