FE college slammed for dropping travel and tourism course at the 11th hour
A further education college has been criticised for dropping its popular travel and tourism course at the 11th hour citing ‘the changing face of the travel industry’.
Milton Keynes College said it was contacting students who had applied for the course starting in September and was offering alternatives.
It claimed due to the enormous change in the travel and tourism industry in recent years from high street to internet, that it believed it was the correct decision.
Deputy principal, Nick Isles, said: "The travel and tourism industries have undergone enormous change in recent years with the wholesale migration of the sector from the High Street to the internet.
"It is vital for the economy of the city, its employers and students that the College focuses its resources to meet the challenges of a changing environment.
"This means that each year we review future jobs demand and then develop appropriate curriculum to try and meet that demand in partnership with industry and other stakeholders.
Disappointed students have launched a Facebook page in protest of the last minute decision entitled ‘Bring Travel & Tourism back to MK College’ which has already attracted 265 likes.
One post said: "Really important to remember that this course has been withdrawn to students this year (2014/15) at the last minute. They had got the correct grades, passed interview, been accepted, received confirmation of their places and attended an induction."
Former student Michael Harrison said: "It would be a huge shame to see the end of the Travel & Tourism courses at MK College. My 2 years (94-96) on a GNVQ course set me on my way to completing my HND in Travel & Tourism Management, followed by completion of a BA Hons in Tourism Studies."
