Fighter jets scramble in Eastern England after another hoax bomb threat
RAF Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled to escort a commercial flight into London Heathrow after yet another hoax bomb threat dogged Air India.
The ‘sonic boom’ was heard over East Anglia as the jets escorted the flight.
A bomb threat was received about one hour before the Mumbai to Heathrow flight was due to land.
“Air India flight AI129, from Mumbai to London, received a bomb threat on social media,” the airline said.
“The aircraft landed safely at Heathrow Airport and all passengers and crew have disembarked.”
The flight spent some time circling over Norfolk before landing without incident.
“We can confirm that RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighter aircraft from RAF Coningsby were launched to investigate a civilian aircraft,” a RAF spokesperson said.
Mumbai Police issued its seventh FIR show cause report relating to a spate of bomb threats in the past few days.
Indian long haul and a few domestic flights have been targeted – with Air India, SpiceJet and IndiGo flights hit with hoax bomb threats.
There have been at least 20 incidents since Monday.
Nearly all have been made online and in some cases, the IP addresses were traced to London and Germany,
