Fiji declares itself ‘Covid-free’

Fiji has proudly announced  itself as the latest nation to become ‘Covid-free.’

Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama said the country’s last known confirmed case is now free of the virus.

"Even with our testing numbers climbing by the day, it’s now been 45 days since we recorded our last case," the PM said.

When Fiji got its first case back in March there was panic but it took swift action to seal borders and shut down inbound tourism.

So far it has recorded just 18 cases and no deaths.

The PM attributes it to ‘answered prayers, hard work, and affirmation of science.’

"The healthy habits we’ve picked up the past months must continue," Bainimarama said, in order to avoid a second wave.

Health minister Ifereimi Waqainabete said a ban on gatherings of more than 20 people would continue.

We cannot drop our guard," he said.

The Fiji economy has been hard hit as tourism ground to a halt and wants to be at the forefront of the tourism recovery in Oceania.

Fiji has shown interest in being part of a travel bubble with Australia and New Zealand.
