Fiji visitor numbers continue to climb

SYDNEY – Fiji is claiming a new Australian visitor arrival record for the month of September following its record-breaking July and August performance,

The 26,342 figure achieved for the month eclipses the record 23,458 figure achieved in September 2008, an increase of 10.9 per cent.

The September figure brings Fiji’s Australian visitor tally for the year to 162,072, now 5.7 per cent down on the 171,790 figure achieved for the January – September period last year.

Tourism Fiji regional director Australia Paresh Pant said the Australian September result proved one of the destination’s strongest for the year and had helped take Fiji’s overall international figures further back towards the black.

“Considering our international visitor arrivals were almost 24 percent down in the first three months of the year, international visitor arrivals have continued to grow steadily in recent months to reach 390,565,” he said.

“While this figure still represents an 11.2 percent deficit when compared to the 440,061 recorded for the same period in 2008, it remains a very far cry from the more 27 percent drop we recorded in the first quarter of 2009.”
