First a WWII bomb, then fears of a hijack

Saturday, 30 Aug, 2012 0

Two fighter jets intercepted a holiday plane heading for Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport yesterday when a loss of radio contact between the pilot and air traffic control sparked fears there was a hijacker onboard.

The Vueling aircraft, carrying 180 passengers from Malaga, was held at a far corner of Schiphol airfield, surrounded by security forces, ambulances and photographers, until Dutch national broadcaster NOS made phone contact with a passenger who told listeners there had been a mistake.

Earlier in the day, part of the airport had been close due to the unearthing of an unexploded WWII bomb by workmen under Terminal C, forcing airlines to cancel and delay some flights.
