First cruise ship norovirus outbreak of 2024
Almost 100 cruise ship guests were sickened by a norovirus outbreak during a Celebrity Cruises sailing.
The January 3 cruise from Tampa returned to the Florida port on Friday with 92 guests reporting gastro-like symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea.
Eight crew members were also affected, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
The ship was carrying a total of 2,056 guests.
The cruise line ramped up cleaning and disinfection during the cruise and isolated those who came down with the bug.
It was the first cruise so far this year that meets the CDC’s definition of a gastrointestinal outbreak based on the percentage of cases.
There were a total of 14 cruise ship outbreaks during 2023.
