First decent snowfall of 2007 gets skiers excited

Saturday, 24 May, 2007 0

It was a picture-postcard winter scene at Falls Creek yesterday after an overnight, early season cold front brought the first decent snowfall of 2007, leaving the alpine resort blanketed by 10-15 cm snow giving it an early winter look and feel.

It was a timely reminder for lodge owners, and guests intending to book a winter holiday, that Queen’s Birthday, the official start of winter,is only 17 days from today.

The Long Range Weather Forecaster John Moore stated we’d get a reasonable fall in May (actually couple of days earlier) so if his prediction of snow for Queen’s Birthday holds up it will be a fabulous start to the winter.

This significant change in the weather (it was minus 3.6 degrees on Tuesday morning) at Falls Creek Alpine Resort,in tandem with increased snow making capacity, has stimulated increased interest in a winter holiday at Victoria’s largest alpine resort.

The next cold front is forecast in about a weeks time which is perfect timing for the snowmakers to begin laying a foundation for the expected snowfalls predicted by Moore, the long range weather forecaster.

He’s confident there’ll be a follow-up snowfall between 8-10 June.

Predicting the weather is an inexact science but skiers and boarders remain optimistic each year, particularly after the most recent falls at all the popular Australian alpine resorts.

Regular reports from the weather experts certainly provide lots of encouraging weather-related information for the alpine communities. The prognosis for snow is very optimistic.

The National Climate Centre is tipping solid rain (snow at higher elevations) reinforcing the arrival of a La Nina weather phenomenon.

What’s significant about La Nina?  It is a much more snow-friendly weather system that follows a drought-causing El Nino.

Coupled with all international models showing a further cooling of the equatorial Pacific Ocean over the next few months, skiers and boarders will relish to opportunity to once again schuss the slopes at their favourite resorts.

There’s numerous value-for money early season packages this winter at Falls Creek. Here’s a few examples.
