First Japan casino resort approved
The first Japan casino resort has been officially approved.
The resort will be operated by Osaka IR KK, a local joint venture with MGM Resorts International and other investors.
It will be sited on an artificial island in Osaka Bay.
Japan casinos were previously illegal until a 2018 law allowed a limited number of integrated resorts.
No other locations are close to being approved due to local anti-gambling opposition.
Developers for the $11 billion Osaka project expect up to 20 million visitors a year when fully open.
It will include conference venues, a hotel and theatre.
It is expected to open in 2029.
