Flight cancellations will continue until late tomorrow

Nearly 5,000 flights have been cancelled today (Tuesday) as the US east coast is pounded by a super-storm.

Some airlines are saying flights are unlikely to resume until late tomorrow (Wednesday).

In total, there have been nearly 15,000 flights cancelled since the start of the disruption.

British Airways has cancelled return flights to and from the east coast of the US today, including flights to New York JFK, Newark, Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia.

All flights to and from Boston are planned to operate as normal.

Virgin Atlantic has cancelled all flights to and from New York today and some early flights from Newark and JFK, but flight to and from Boston and Washington are due to restart today.

The storm is expected to cost the airline industry millions but observers say it won’t be as bad as the ash cloud crisis that hit Europe in 2010.

During that period, more than 90,000 flights were cancelled and 10 million passengers impacted.
