Flights cancelled as islands prepare for hurricanes
Flights have been cancelled as weather experts warn of flash flooding, damaging wind gusts, mudslides and power shortages in Hawaii.
The brunt of Hurricane Iselle is due to hit Big Island in the southern part of the island chain, while a second, Julio, is following close behind.
American Airlines and US Airways cancelled all flights leaving or going to the Big Island and Maui after 6 pm local time Thursday, reports USA Today.
Airports remained open but flights were being curtailed as the state awaits the impact of the two hurricanes.
AccuWeather meteorologists predict Iselle will make landfall over the Big Island this morning with sustained winds between 70 and 80 mph and higher gusts.
It said strong winds will cause at least scattered power failures on the islands, including in the City of Honolulu.
It is the first hurricane warning issued for the main Hawaiian Islands since Hurricane Fernanda in 1993.
Earlier this week, the UK’S Foreign and Commonwealth Office revised its travel advice urging Brits in Hawaii to ‘monitor the programme of approaching storms in the Pacific and follow instructions issued by the local Hawaiian authorities’.
