Fly only Air India, government rules
NEW DELHI – India’s finance ministry has made it mandatory for all government staff to fly with cash-strapped Air India.
The ruling applies to officials travelling on work-related business on both domestic and international sectors.
According to The Times of India, if officials are headed for a place not connected by AI, they will have to fly to the point closest to the destination that’s served by the national carrier. Thereafter, they can take any other airline, but preferably one that has a tie-up with AI.
‘‘In all cases of air travel, both domestic and international, where the government of India bears the cost of air passage, the officials concerned may travel only by Air India,’’ the official memorandum said.
The ruling also applies to autonomous bodies funded by the government.
The ruling reverses a previous government decision which allowed staff to travel on any airline in order to obtain the best fare.
