Flying donkey rescued by British tabloid

A donkey sent parasailing over a Russian beach has been bought by a British newspaper.

The female donkey, Anapka, made headlines in July when a recreation company sent the animal up into the sky for a promotional stunt.

Anapka spent about half an hour in the air, and video of the stunt went viral on YouTube.

But thousands of upset British readers of the The Sun urged the newspaper to rescue the animal.

Anapka travelled this week from her small Azov Sea town to the Kremlin riding school outside Moscow for medical checks.

A Sun reporter says the donkey will spend at least a month in Moscow before the newspaper decides what to do with her.

The story has parallels with one several years ago when British newspapers fought to buy a donkey that was about to be pushed over a cliff in Spain, part of an annual ritual.

The donkey saga appeared in the British tabloid newspapers for weeks on end, and was the inspiration for a TV series set in a television newsroom.

The title of the show, Drop the Dead Donkey, was a reference to the words of newspaper editors when they finally had enough of the donkey story and didn’t want to see it on the front page anymore.
