FO updates advice for the Ukraine
Tour operators featuring the Ukraine have said they are not cancelling forthcoming trips yet as the Foreign Office issues new advice.
Regent Holidays said it was too soon to cancel late spring and early summer holidays already booked to Ukraine but said it was closely monitoring the situation with representatives on the ground.
Andrea Godfrey, programme manager, Regent Holidays said: "We don’t have anybody due to travel in March. Some clients went in early January and in February but were all back home before the main troubles last weekend.
"Currently it is low season for Ukraine , the majority of our clients travel between May and September. It is too soon to cancel late spring/early summer holidays that have already booked to Ukraine but we are monitoring the situation closely with regular news updates and through contact with close friends – I lived in Kyiv myself for many years.
"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those that have lost their lives over the recent weeks and we hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the current situation."
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is advising against all but essential travel to the city of Kyiv and it urges holidaymakers currently visiting or living in Kyiv to be cautious in public.
It says tourists can use Kyiv Boryspil airport as a transit stop but should not leave the airport grounds.
The FO added that the British Embassy in Kyiv is temporarily closed to visitors but can be contacted by email to [email protected].
The advice follows several days of violent protests that claimed 83 lives.
Ukraine’s parliament voted to remove President Viktor Yanukovich after three months of street protests, while his arch-rival Yulia Tymoshenko was released from jail.
The FO said as of Sunday, the situation in Kyiv and other cities has calmed considerably.
The transport system in Kyiv has resumed a normal service after being closed and airports remain open.
